One of the simplest things you can do to change and update the look of your home is through lighting. Lighting is inexpensive in comparison to redoing your entire home with new paint and décor. After all the hard work you may find you have not achieved the design or feel you were looking to achieve. Lighting is an essential part of home décor and may be something you overlooked.

Different types of lighting in your home can give you the feeling you are looking for. Lighting itself gives your home its “feeling” not the color of the walls or the furniture and decorations. Yes, you can compliment furniture with wall color and vice versa however the correct lighting gives your home the ambiance you are looking for.

Your personality should shine through your lighting. You can use simple lighting changes to enhance the comfort of your home. Natural lighting can be used with artificial lighting to achieve the desired type of lighting. Think about how you want your home to feel to yourself and others. Now think about lighting. Even in your imagination you can picture ambiance which is found in lighting. Look further into your dream environment and you will see lighting is there in the forefront…

Once you have decided that you are going to change either furniture or wall color think about how new lighting is going to enhance your changes. Thinking out the process of how you want your home to feel will lead you to the lighting in your home. There are three types of lighting you can use to work together to provide brighter light for tasks and an overall warm glow.

1. Ambient Lighting – includes pendant lights, chandeliers, sconces, ceiling fan lighting and lighting added directly into the architecture.

2. Task Lighting – lighting for a specific area where you are working or cooking such as track lighting, under counter lighting or a simple desk lamp focused only on the work area.

3. Accent Lighting- this type of lighting enhances what you have picked for you ambient lighting such as a floor lamp or lighting over a picture or mirror, it is what the word implies-accent. This type of lighting may not be used all the time, however when it is it is truly a focal point.

In using lighting in your décor it is critical to choose the correct illumination. Ambient lighting sets the predominant light level and mood. Using neutral tones throughout your house and adding texture and lighting will create a great new look. LED lighting has more subtle lighting features than the traditional incandescent lighting.

High ceiling lighting should have a golden hue to give your home peace and tranquility. Using all the lighting options available such as task lighting and accent lighting will allow you to add your personal touch to areas such as kitchens, work space, bathrooms and bedrooms. There is nothing more important than a good night’s sleep and the proper lighting can provide a restful and invigorating sleep.

Lighting is not a difficult concept and gives you inexpensive and beautiful results. Often lighting is the last thing a person thinks about when decorating. Look at your lighting first. Making some simple lighting changes prior to major redecorating which may change your whole opinion of the need to redecorate. You might just be surprised at the results!
